Haunted Places In Pennsylvania: Pennhurst State School and Hospital

Pennhurst State School and Hospital is one of the most popular haunted places in Pennsylvania and the United States.  Opened in 1908, the facility was intended to care for the mentally ill and was originally known as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic and took in patients quickly.  It only took 4 years for the facility to become horribly understaffed and frighteningly overcrowded.  Conditions became  so inhumane that the facility was actually documented in 1968 and after years of controversy and ongoing issues, the hospital was closed on December 9, 1987.

Due to the fact that staff referred to the mentally ill as ‘children’, no matter what their age was, the following documentary that was created while the hospital was in operation was titled ‘Suffer The Little Children’ and exposed the horrible conditions.  It is believed by paranormal researchers that the hospital is still haunted by the tortured souls that found themselves in custody of the hospital, some having been placed there at birth and never having seen life outside of it’s walls before their death.  It is believed that they have nowhere else to go and not having known any other home, leaving behind so much unsettled business, they remain, guarding the defunct facility.  Are they guarding it from outsiders to keep them out because it’s their territory?  Or could they possibly be attempting to protect them and warn them to get out before they suffer as well?

If you have investigative material from this facility, we’d love to share it with others, so please feel free to tell us about it!
