Recently I was allowed to be a part of a very special investigation. This location was one that was very near and dear to my heart as it was one of the biggest “haunted house” stories I had ever heard. I mean people would refer to this as if it were as infamous as the Amityville Horror but instead was only about an hour from my own home. The Discovery Channel even did a re-enactment of the story in their show A Haunting entitled Dark Forest.
I could sit and go over all the past history which is very interesting in itself but, at this time I will just cover SOME of my personal encounters with the spirits, the land, and the house that is known infamously as the Haunted Hinsdale House. I have been to the house personally a total of 3 times and all of which were by way of direct invitation. I will explain a bit later why I felt the need to make that statement and the other tragedies that have taken place.
During my visits which included a tour of the land, a part of the Tragic Hinsdale House webisode series on youtube, and a full on investigation of the house I have had many different experiences. I will never forget the first time I was sitting in the backyard and heard the voice of a little girl clearly say hello. As innocent as that is, it is also spine tingling to think that the residence were two elderly people and there are no near by neighbors that would have wandered over.
I did go over and look in the area where the voice had come from and found nobody there. After all, it was only around 6pm on a warm July evening so the sun was still shinning bright. As a part of the web-series I also was witness to a couple different strange occurrences such as a brief issue with camera/audio equipment, a woman feeling unwell, and a moment where the house felt as if it had a shiver from the very foundation upward to the top peak.
There were many different things that happened throughout each visit but the brunt of what I dealt with was when I along with a very small and close group were invited to fully investigate the house and it’s happenings. We do so with a great deal of caution because we all know the stories, the history, and of the failed exorcism that took place in the 1970’s. While we were still outside and in front of the house we heard a loud crashing bang from within. We all looked at each other as if each were doing their own personal head count.
We were ALL outside and nothing appeared to be disturbed inside the old empty house. Before the sun had even gone down we began our investigation and within the first 5 minutes of being there we received a very clear evp that is a direct response to me. I was simply stating our intention of being respectful and wanting to understand what is happening on the property. As I began, I said let me just state this and during the pause I took before finishing my statement a clear male voice told me, “Get Out”.
This was just the first of many evps captured throughout the house that night. Some were of the spirits within talking among themselves and others were directly responding to our questions or telling us things they felt we should know or do for them. We also managed to obtain a picture which was taken with a hunting trap cam that we can not even attempt to explain or debunk as the only two people in the house at the time are also in the picture and well . . . . People are not transparent.
The reason for my earlier comment regarding being invited to the site is because for decades, even after the original documented case of activity in the house people have felt the need to go “check it out”. There has been a problem with thrill seekers wanting a cheap thrill on a summer night and kids using the vacant house as if it were a college frat house. Even recently people have been going to the property and causing damage to the house. Some have broken into it by kicking in the front door, smashing windows, and have caused more damage once inside.
On our visit we dealt with some things that we were not completely ready to face and I will go on a limb to say that while in the house I’ve come closer to dealing with evil than I ever wanted. We were in rooms with shadows that would just lurk about and hover around us individually, something there was systematically looking for weak spots in a couple of the team members to break them down and attempt show their dominance. What was in that house and what happened to the team left lasting impressions on us all.
I’m not sure which is scarier though! The things we dealt with that night and some of us are still dealing with or the fact that so many kids and even adults just go in and wander around to see what it’s like. The day we were last there we walked up to the house to find a pile of crushed beer cans by the front door. These things scare me because I now have had what I’m sure was just a small taste of what the spirits there can do and so many go blindly into places “because it’s fun” and because they’ve seen it on TV.
This place is not one to be taken lightly, it’s not a paranormal playground and it’s definitely not a party spot. The Hinsdale house is one that people should take caution with not only because it is private property and posted land but also because the paranormal in general is not something I believe should be played with and please trust me as I say, what is in that house will take more joy in playing with you!
